380V, 400V and 480V LED Lighting for Outdoor Industrial Projects

380V outdoor industrial lighting system installation

380V is commonly used for high-power outdoor and industrial LED lighting systems in countries where three-phase 380/220V distribution is standard. It can reduce circuit current and voltage drop compared with supplying the same load at a lower voltage, but it is not the universal voltage for every country or project.

European projects may use approximately 400V line-to-line, some markets use 415V, and North American projects may require 347V or 480V. The correct choice depends on the local electrical system, LED driver input range, circuit configuration, cable distance, protection equipment and applicable regulations.

This guide explains the engineering reasons for using higher-voltage distribution while also identifying the limits and checks required before selecting a fixture or driver.

Technical Note: Voltage selection must follow local electrical codes, project design requirements and LED driver specifications. In many international projects, 380V / 400V three-phase systems are common, while North American projects may use 277V / 480V systems. Always confirm the final voltage with a qualified electrical engineer before installation.

1. Lighting Has Evolved Beyond “Small Bulbs”

A decade ago, outdoor lighting was dominated by metal halide and sodium lamps, with each bulb ranging between 250W and 400W. Today, everything has changed:

  • Stadium lights now range from 1000W to 2000W per unit.
  • Airport and port high-mast lights operate in groups of several lights.
  • The total lighting system can easily reach tens of thousands or even millions of watts.

As the wattage per light increases, so does its role in the electrical system. Lights are no longer small loads but rather substantial “high-power devices.” Naturally, the power supply method cannot stick to the 220V standard.

2. Why 380V Solves the Problem

In engineering, there’s a simple truth: when power is constant, increasing voltage results in a reduction in current. This principle almost entirely explains why 380V is so popular. In outdoor industrial lighting, the size of the current directly affects:

  • The thickness of the cables.
  • The amount of line loss.
  • Whether the voltage can reach the end-point effectively.
  • The long-term stability of the power distribution system.

For the same single-phase real-power load and a similar power factor, increasing the supply voltage from 220V to 380V reduces the required current by approximately 42%. Three-phase systems require a different calculation and must be designed according to the actual line voltage, phase arrangement and power factor.. This reduction brings several advantages.

Why Higher-Voltage Power Helps Large Outdoor Lighting Systems

Engineering Factor Why It Matters Impact on Lighting Projects
Lower current For the same power, higher voltage can reduce current. Helps reduce cable heating, voltage drop and conductor size.
Long cable distance Ports, airports, stadiums and industrial yards often have long power runs. Higher-voltage systems can be easier to design for long-distance lighting circuits.
Large total system load A high mast or stadium project may include many high-power fixtures. Three-phase distribution helps balance load and improve system stability.
Cable and installation cost Cable cost can be a major part of large outdoor lighting projects. Proper voltage selection may reduce cable size, conduit size and installation difficulty.
Driver compatibility LED drivers must match the project voltage and electrical design. Always confirm AC100–277V, AC200–480V or customized driver options before ordering.

Where 380V / 400V Class Power Is Commonly Considered

Application Why Higher-Voltage Power May Be Used REITA Product Direction

3. Line Losses and Cable Sizes Are Immediately Reduced

The line loss is proportional to the square of the current—this is an unavoidable physical law. When the current is reduced by 40%, it means:

  • Line heating significantly decreases.
  • Transmission efficiency improves.
  • The cables can be thinner.

In outdoor settings, the power supply distance is often quite long. For example:

  • Stadium lighting poles can be 200–300 meters away from the distribution room.
  • Airports and ports may extend up to 500–1000 meters.

In such cases, the real bottleneck is not whether the system can handle the load, but whether the voltage can reach the far end. With 380V, the current is smaller, allowing for larger permissible voltage drops. This means:

  • For the same distance, thinner cables can be used.
  • For the same cables, the voltage can be sent further.

This is why high-mast lights and airport lighting systems can be more easily calculated and executed using 380V than 220V.

4.Electrical Checks Before Selecting 380V, 400V or 480V Fixtures

Higher-voltage distribution can reduce current and support long cable runs, but it does not automatically make every lighting system safer, more efficient or less expensive.

ItemWhat Must Be Confirmed
Distribution systemLine-to-line or line-to-neutral voltage, phase arrangement and grounding method.
LED driverRated input-voltage range, frequency, input current, power factor and surge capability.
Neutral and harmonicsNeutral-current risk depends on circuit topology, harmonic content and load balance. It cannot be judged from nominal voltage alone.
EfficiencyDriver efficiency must be taken from the selected driver specification. A higher supply voltage does not automatically guarantee higher efficiency.
ProtectionBreaker, isolation, grounding, SPD, cable size and fault protection must follow the project electrical design.

Safety Note: 380V, 400V and 480V systems involve hazardous voltage. Final circuit design and installation must be completed or approved by qualified electrical professionals according to local regulations.

5. Does 380V Make It Harder to Achieve Three-Phase Balance?

This is a common misconception. In fact, achieving three-phase balance is easier in large-scale lighting systems with 380V. The approach is straightforward:

  • Some lights connect between Phase A and Phase B.
  • Others between Phase B and Phase C.
  • The rest between Phase C and Phase A.

With careful planning and appropriate numbers of lights on each phase, three-phase current balance is automatically achieved. Today, electrical software makes these calculations simple, so it’s not an obstacle.

6. 380V Can Be More Cost-Effective in the Long Run

Looking at individual components, 380V does have some “upfront costs” that might seem higher, such as:

  • Needing a 2P breaker.
  • Higher requirements for isolation switches and lightning protection devices.

However, when you consider the entire system, you’ll find:

  • Cable costs decrease significantly.
  • Pipe sizes shrink, reducing construction difficulty.
  • Many renovation projects can use existing wiring.

In outdoor industrial lighting, cable and construction costs are often much higher than the cost of distribution components themselves. So, overall, 380V can often be more cost-effective.
