Beam Angles: Why We Often Mix Optics
In real projects, a single beam angle rarely produces the best uniformity.
We often combine narrow beams (10°/15°) for long throws with medium beams (30°/45°/60°) for area fill.
And importantly: for the area close to the pole base, a wide beam such as 90° can be necessary to eliminate uneven “dead zones” directly under or near the pole line, improving overall field uniformity.
A Real-World Example (Anonymized)
A school football field was running old HID/metal halide fixtures with uneven coverage—bright hot spots near the poles and darker areas along the sidelines.
We redesigned the layout using a mixed-optics approach: narrow beams for distance coverage, and wider optics (including 90° in specific positions) to smooth out the illumination near pole-adjacent areas.
Result: a more uniform field appearance, improved player comfort (less glare), and a clear path to lower long-term maintenance.
