A supplier should not describe a floodlight as “480V compatible” merely because another product family uses a high-voltage driver. Likewise, a UL or ETL mark on another model does not certify the proposed CRANESTAR configuration.

347V and 480V Are Not Interchangeable Labels

A North American RFQ should state:

  • Breaker;

What Does NRTL Certification Mean?

OSHA’s Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory program recognizes private organizations that test and certify products within defined scopes. Each NRTL uses its own registered mark, and certification applies to the evaluated product and relevant safety standard.

Intertek is one recognized NRTL, and the ETL Listed Mark is used to show that a product has been tested and certified to applicable North American safety requirements. ETL marks can cover the United States and Canada when the certification scope and mark indicate that coverage.

The buyer should verify:

  • Manufacturer;
  • Model number;
  • Certification mark;
  • Listing directory entry;
  • Applicable standard;
  • Voltage;
  • Wattage;
  • Wet-location or outdoor rating;
  • US-only or US-and-Canada scope;

North American Construction Illumination

OSHA 1926.56 requires construction areas, ramps, runways, corridors, offices, shops and storage areas to meet the minimum illumination intensities in Table D-3 while work is in progress. The table provides minimums by area or operation, but a tower crane project may require higher task-specific levels for lifting, inspection, material identification or detailed work.

High-power LED drivers can draw a short-duration inrush current when energized.

The electrical engineer should verify:

  • Number of fixtures per breaker;
  • Breaker curve;
  • Contactor rating;
  • Simultaneous switching;
  • Generator supply;
  • Voltage drop;

A fixture may have a low normal operating current but still create switching problems when several units start together.
